There isn't one California-mandated price for a Smog Check.
Individual smog stations set their own inspection prices. California's Bureau of Automotive Repair does not regulate the amount a station charges for the inspection.
There is also a state certificate fee when a Smog Check certificate is issued.
So if you're comparing prices, compare the total price for your particular vehicle, not just the number printed largest in an advertisement.
Not every vehicle requires the same inspection.
An ordinary newer passenger car is different from a pre-2000 vehicle requiring tailpipe emissions testing. Larger vehicles, RVs and other vehicles can also require different equipment and more time.
Before heading to a station, ask for the price applicable to your year and type of vehicle.
At San Juan Auto Smog, we also offer a Smog Check coupon, and all 2000-and-newer vehicles that fail their initial inspection get a free retest within 60 days, except on select promotions that exclude it.
If your concern isn't price but time, you're also welcome to drop your vehicle off and pick it up later. For customers who live or work close by, we may sometimes be able to provide a ride to or from the shop, depending on staffing and how busy we are.
