California requires smog checks for most gasoline vehicles, but several categories are exempt. Rules can change, so always confirm with the DMV for your specific vehicle.
Gasoline vehicles model-year 1975 and older, fully electric vehicles, motorcycles, and (for renewal) vehicles eight model years old or newer are generally exempt — though newer vehicles typically pay a smog abatement fee instead.
Most 2000-and-newer gas vehicles need a smog check for renewal, change of ownership, or initial registration. Many diesel vehicles are now included too.
