How Long Does It Take to Get a Smog Check? | Fair Oaks

Usually about 30 minutes for the inspection, according to California's Bureau of Automotive Repair.

But your entire visit doesn't necessarily take 30 minutes.

We've had plenty of San Juan Auto Smog customers tell us they were in and out in 15 or 20 minutes when we weren't backed up. At other times, several customers can arrive at once.

There Are Really Two Questions

So there are really two questions:

How long does the actual inspection take?

Allow about 30 minutes.

How long will I be at the shop?

That depends on the vehicle and how many customers are ahead of you.

You Don't Have to Stay at the Shop

And there's a third option: you don't have to stay at the shop at all.

If you're in a hurry, leave your vehicle with us and pick it up when it's finished. If you live or work nearby, we can sometimes give you a ride to or from the shop when we have the staff and time available.

Walk-Ins and STAR Certification

Most 2000-and-newer vehicles are walk-in at our Fair Oaks shop. Older vehicles, RVs, vans and heavy trucks are best booked ahead because they can require additional time and equipment.

We're also a STAR-certified station, so if your DMV renewal says "Smog Certification Required at a STAR Station," we can perform the inspection.
