A STAR Smog Check doesn't automatically take longer than a regular California Smog Check.
Allow about 30 minutes for a typical inspection.
The term STAR sometimes causes confusion. It doesn't mean California has created a longer or more difficult inspection just for your car.
A STAR-certified station meets additional Bureau of Automotive Repair performance standards and can inspect vehicles that DMV specifically directs to a STAR station.
The inspection procedure itself still depends on your vehicle.
Most 2000-and-newer vehicles use California's onboard diagnostic inspection system. Older vehicles generally require a different inspection involving tailpipe emissions testing.
Look at your DMV renewal notice.
If it says "Smog Certification Required at a STAR Station," you need to use a STAR-certified station.
San Juan Auto Smog is STAR-certified.
Most 2000-and-newer vehicles are walk-in. Older vehicles, RVs, vans and heavy trucks are best scheduled in advance.
If you're short on time, you can also leave your vehicle with us and return later rather than wait for the inspection. If you live or work close to our shop, ask whether a ride is available. Depending on staffing and our workload, we may be able to help.
