Most California Smog Checks take about 30 minutes. Some straightforward newer vehicles can be completed faster, while older or unusual vehicles may take longer.
California doesn't inspect every vehicle the same way.
Most 2000-and-newer vehicles are inspected using the vehicle's onboard diagnostic system. Pre-2000 vehicles generally require tailpipe emissions testing using different equipment.
The technician must also complete the required visual and functional portions of the inspection.
There's another variable that has nothing to do with your vehicle: how many people arrived before you.

Most 2000-and-newer vehicles at San Juan Auto Smog don't require an appointment. If you're bringing us an older vehicle, RV, van or heavy truck, book ahead.
You're welcome to drop your vehicle off with us and pick it up later. This can be especially convenient if you're coming from Sacramento and have other things to do in the area.
For customers who live or work close to the shop, we can sometimes provide a ride to or from the shop when staffing and our workload allow.
